Competitive archery could easily have started with a couple of stone-age archers (like maybe Larry, Bill or Don) with nothing better to do than to find out which of them could shoot the furthest.

3-D shoots test the archers’ skill, using a target course in a woodland setting allowing for some very challenging target placements. It is also great preparation for the hunt!

The Stoughton Conservation Club will host three 3-D shoots this summer. May 24th - 25, June 28th – 29th and August 16th – 17th. Please check the Event Calendar for specific times.

Details of the 3-D Shoot(s):
The May & June tournament will have twenty-eight 3-D targets using a mixture McKenzie and Rinehart targets.

The August shoot will have twenty-eight 3-D targets using a mixture McKenzie and Rinehart targets along with twenty-eight Broad-head targets.

As usual at the Stoughton Conservation Club, food and refreshments will be available.

Once again, it’s time to find out who is the “BEST” all around shooter in the Stoughton Conservation Club. (Yes Marcus we know this title has been yours in past years, but as last year proves it, you can be beat!) Good job Paul! There’s no question about it, after this competition serious bragging rights belong to the winner!

Bring your own bow and arrows, shotgun, .22 pistol, .22 rifle, and ammunition. There will be a very limited amount of shooting equipment on loan for those that do not have certain items.

SCC hosts a Spring & Fall Hunter Education Course.

There are many benefits for taking the WI basic hunter education class. You must have completed a hunter education course and show the certificate to purchase any hunting license in Wisconsin. Club members are required to have hunter education/firearm safety training to participate in a club firearm league. The certificate will serve as your small game license & you will receive other privileges from the DNR for the calendar year in which you take the class. You will also need it to apply for any out of state hunting license. The really big benefit: it will help keep you and the rest of us SAFE as we share the tradition, woods & fields together.

The basic hunter education course instills in students the knowledge and skill to be a responsible and safe hunter. The course follows the WI DNR curriculum. Students learn how hunting accidents are caused and how they can be prevented. Hunter responsibility and safety are stressed throughout the classes, which consist of lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, and individual study. All instructors are volunteers and members of the SCC. We reserve the right to expel students that do not follow our code of conduct; especially regarding horseplay and following verbal instructions.

Who is eligible to take a class: Anyone proficient in English can take the class. (Persons with special needs must contact the DNR for separate accommodations.) We recommend only responsible persons who turn 12 in the calendar year of the course, or older, take the class.

Requirements to complete the class: Complete attendance for all three days is required. All students are required to achieve a proficient score on a written (true/false & multiple choice) exam and demonstrate competent knowledge & skill in safe firearm handling.

Length of Course: Minimum 10 hours. The average length is 18 hours.

Cost of Course: $10 per student.

Class Availability and Information: Classes are held in April & September. SCC can only accommodate 70 students and they always fill up fast. Registration is on the first day. There is no pre-registration. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. However, it is suggested that you get there at least 1 hour early.

Note: In the past, some SCC members have expressed their displeasure at having to get in line so early (the line starts forming as early as 6 a.m.) for a course put on by their Club. Members of SCC took the time to become certified as instructors and then they give their own time as a convenience for our members and the community at large. The Old Clubhouse and indoor pistol range will be closed all three days. The rifle range is closed on the Sunday of class.

A special note: If you have unwanted bows or firearms, you can donated them to the SCC Hunter Ed group and deduct their fair-market value from your taxes as a charitable contribution (The Club is a non-profit). The Club will likely use the gun or bow as a demonstration tool.
